Sedation Dentistry
Three levels of comfort, from a light calm to fully at ease, so a dental visit doesn't have to be something you dread.
If the thought of the dentist makes your stomach tighten, you are not alone, and it is nothing to apologize for. A lot of our patients have put off care for years because of it. Sedation is simply a way to take the fear and discomfort out of the visit, so you can get the care you need and we can do our best work. We offer three options, and the right one depends on you: how you feel, your health history, and what your appointment involves. Dr. Rider will talk it through with you first and help you choose.
Nitrous oxide: a light, easy calm
Often called laughing gas, nitrous oxide is the gentlest option. You breathe it through a small mask over your nose, and within a few minutes a light, relaxed, slightly floaty feeling settles in. You stay fully awake and can talk with us the whole time. The best part is how quickly it clears: a few minutes of breathing plain oxygen at the end and it is gone, so for most people it is the one sedation option where you can drive yourself home and get on with your day. It is a good fit for milder nerves or a straightforward visit.
Twilight sedation: deeply relaxed, barely aware
Twilight sedation goes a step further. Medication is given through a small IV so it takes effect smoothly and can be adjusted as we go. You will feel deeply relaxed and drowsy, drifting at the edge of sleep, and most people remember little or nothing of the appointment afterward. You are not unconscious. You can still respond to us, and you breathe on your own the whole time. The anxiety, the sounds, and the sense of time just fade into the background. It is well suited to moderate anxiety or longer procedures. Because the medication takes time to wear off, you will need an adult to drive you home.
IV sedation: fully at ease
IV sedation uses the same IV approach as twilight, taken to a deeper level of relaxation. It is our best option for higher anxiety, for complex treatment, or for combining several procedures into one visit so you only have to steady your nerves once. You rest comfortably and unaware while we work, monitored closely from start to finish. We watch your heart rate, blood pressure, and oxygen for the whole appointment. This is still conscious sedation, not general anesthesia; you breathe on your own throughout. Plan on an adult driving you home and on taking it easy for the rest of the day.
Which one is right for me?
The honest answer is that it depends, and you do not have to decide alone. Some of it is about the visit itself. A routine filling and a full-day restoration call for different things. And some of it is simply about what would help you walk in feeling okay that morning. Your health history and medications matter too, which is why every sedation plan starts with a conversation and a review of your medical background. Tell us how you have felt about dental visits in the past, honestly, and we will find the approach that fits. Getting you through the door comfortably is the whole point.

Sedation questions
Who administers IV sedation?
IV sedation is administered by Dr. Justin Rider, DDS, who has advanced training in IV sedation. Depending on availability and the type of sedation planned for your visit, a visiting anesthesiologist may provide your sedation instead. Either way, you are monitored throughout your appointment. Nitrous oxide and oral sedation options are available for lighter levels of calm.
Is sedation dentistry safe?
We review your health history and medications first to choose the right option for you, and you are monitored for the entire visit. Most patients recover quickly, though IV and oral sedation require a ride home.
Which procedures can be done under sedation?
Almost any of them, including dental implants, wisdom teeth and other extractions, root canals, and even routine care for patients with severe dental anxiety. If fear has kept you away from the dentist, sedation is often the bridge back.
