3 Signs That Your Dental Filling Is Going Bad

Dental fillings are workhorses; they restore millions of teeth and can last many years. But no filling lasts forever. Chewing forces, temperature swings, and time eventually wear down even the best restoration, and a failing filling can quietly let decay back into the tooth underneath. Here are the three signs we tell our Tucson patients to watch for.

1. New sensitivity in a filled tooth

If a tooth that has been quiet for years suddenly twinges with hot coffee, cold water, sweets, or biting pressure, take it seriously. Sensitivity often means the seal between the filling and the tooth has broken down, letting fluid, bacteria, and temperature reach the inner tooth. Caught early, this is often a simple filling replacement; ignored, it can progress to decay under the filling and eventually a root canal.

2. Rough, cracked, or lifted edges you can feel with your tongue

Your tongue is a remarkably sensitive instrument. If it keeps finding a rough patch, a ledge, or a divot on a filled tooth, or if floss suddenly catches or shreds at that spot, the filling's margin may be breaking down. Those microscopic gaps are exactly where bacteria slip in. A filling doesn't have to fall out entirely to be failing; most fail at the edges first.

3. Darkening around the filling, or a visible crack

Look at the tooth in good light. Gray or brown shadows spreading around an old silver filling, dark lines at the margin of a white filling, or a visible crack in either the filling or the tooth are all signs the restoration is no longer protecting the tooth. Old large metal fillings in particular can act like a wedge over the years and stress the surrounding enamel.

What to do if you notice any of these

Don't wait for pain. Pain usually means the problem has already reached the nerve, and small fixes become bigger ones. A quick exam and x-ray can tell us whether the filling just needs replacing, whether there's decay underneath, or whether the tooth now needs a crown to stay strong.
